The Department of Health is Western Australia's public health system. Our purpose is to ensure healthier, longer and better lives for all Western Australians by providing the health care services that people need and delivering a safe, high quality, accountable and sustainable health system.

Our services include:

  • public hospitals and community health services
  • health protection through public health services and disaster preparedness management
  • mental health services including in-patient services, crisis management and community treatment and support services
  • drug and alcohol information, prevention and treatment services
  • dental health services including school dental health and public community dental services
  • Aboriginal health services.
We employ over 31,000 staff and provide health services across the state of Western Australia to over 2.1 million people in metropolitan, rural and remote areas.

Types of jobs available

  • Allied Health Professionals work with doctors and nurses as part of a team, offering services to meet all the health needs of individual patients. Examples: physiotherapists, social workers, speech pathologists, and occupational therapists.
  • Nurses and Midwives work in hospitals, community centres, schools and visit people in their homes.
  • Health Science Professionals work alongside doctors and nurses as part of a team. Examples: laboratory assistants, anaesthetist technicians, medical scientists and pharmacist.
  • Medical Professionals (including doctors) treat and assist in the prevention of human physical and mental illness, disease and injury and promote good human health.
  • Management and Administration staff work to support health services (such as hospitals), promote health and improve legislation, policies and regulations. Examples: clerks, accountants, medical typists, marketers, policy officers, environmental health officers, human resource managers and clinical coders.
  • Support service staff are employed in hospitals and assist with the day to day domestic services. Examples: cleaners, orderlies, ward staff, kitchen hands and patient care assistants.
  • Engineering and trades staff assist with the day to day maintenance of buildings and equipment. Examples include electricians, painters, fitters, and gardeners.
  • Dental professionals provide dental health care services. Examples: dentists, dental therapists, dental chair assistants and dental technicians.
Qualifications

People from a wide range of backgrounds, and with varying degrees of skill and education can get a job WA Health. The qualifications you need for a job can vary from university degrees, to TAFE training, traineeships and on-the-job training.
